Vavaland
I've just got home from short trip to Amsterdam. I've been there for 4 days and I stayed at Vava's place. Vava is a friend of mine that I met during the workshop in Krsko. He was a great host during my staying and since I'm not in the mood for writing a reportage, here are just some impressions.
It was very cold, even canals were wearing winter clothes.
In China's part of the town the streets names are written in Chinese. I wonder what would happen if in some parts of Paris the streets names would be also written in Arabic.
But London syndrome is also present: cameras are on several streets around Red Lights District.
You can buy bear in the cinema. But you can also drink bear in cinema.
This windmill is still a brewery.
Kaas means cheese, Zatte is a great bear with 8% of alcohol.
Vava's girlfriend Janneke took this picture. She put the camera down before the actual shot. Still, I like the picture a lot:)
On my last evening, Vava and Janneke in action.

Casablanca
It's been 2 months since we started with classes at Eicar. This year I teach production for bachelor 1st year and master 1st year. Those are mainly theoretical courses 2 hours a week.
"My class", where I teach directing, is 2nd year bachelor program. We have almost 40 students so we divided them into two groups and the other teacher is Adriano Valerio. We alternate classes so that both group can have lectures from both of us.
There are two premises in 2nd year program. First, how to tell a story in realistic way, stressing also the film structure, dramaturgy... Second, it's working with actors.
Last week we started with exercises with actors. The students get the given scene from films and then they have to direct with actors. Each year I choose the scene from Casablanca, where Ingrid Bergman comes to ask for transit letters from Humphrey Bogart, to be the first one because it's very easy to break it down into units and to find objectives and obstacles. In one class three students work with actors on the scene and then we analyse their work together, then the following week one of them shoot the scene.
So here is the picture from shooting, where actors Jon Russo and Heike try to do their best of Bogart-Bergman.
At one moment my student Madison took my photo and made some pictures. After, I found this one that I like a lot. D.O.P. August at work (not to forget, director was Brandon).

La Cuisine Libanaise
Few days ago Mirella and I invited Vinciane and Guissepe for a dinner. I was very glad because Mirella promised that she will cook Libanese food which I adore.
So, here how it was.
The starter was of course houmus (made from chickpea's, garlic and lemon - at the end, you put olive oil on top of it) and lebanese bread. Of course, you can eat houmus with the main course also, which was specialy marinated chicken with rice, almonds, rasins and pinuts.
And of course salad, tabbule, made from tomato, parsley and onions.
Hera are the happy eaters (I am not among them because I took the picture but I can assure you, I was the most satisfied one:)). Vine was French and for apettizer we drank viliamovka, which is Slovenian brandy made from pears.
Oh, I almost forgot: for dessert, chockolate, that Guissepe and Vinciane brought from Belgia.
After the dinner we were having a good time listening to music, esspecialy Mika, new Libanese star. I said that it reminds me of Walk like an Egyptian, the old hit from 80's. Because the girls are young, we had to demonstrate thew how we danced at the time.

Reflection
When I came to Paris in October 2003, I had a Russian plan: I will stay in Paris for 5 years no matter what happens and after that period I will draw a line and see if the things are working for me or not. The fifth year have just started and it's still a bit too early for final account, but here are some pluses and minuses in the last 4 years.
- After being in Paris for 2 months, in december 2003 I shot a short film-exercise on super16. I've already written about that here, now I finally uploaded the whole film.
in case of problems, try to open it directly from here
- first year in Paris was very tough for me, I was almost all the time without the money, I didn't understand the word of French and it didn't seem at the time that the things will change. I remember that I was crying out of frustration several times. However, through Balkan connections I got a job at Orly airport (I was "slapping" the luggage as we say in Bosnia) and somehow survived that first year.
- second year started much easier since I got a scholarship from Slovenian Ministry of culture. Suddenly I had a lot of free time since I didn't need to run around like crazy trying to earn few euros. Consequance will be described in next line
- I spoke with at the time my directing professor Ilka Jarvilaturi. I told him how frustrated I'm because I don't speak the language. He told me:"To learn a language you have to either shoot a feature in French or you have to find a french speaking girlfriend.". Just to be sure I did both :)
- third year, partial breakthrough, I got a job as a professor of film directing at the school where I was a student. Great international environment. Big plus.
- that same year passed by working on post-production of paris.love
- fourth year, continuation of teaching. Started a project with Brina Svit, travelled with her to Buenos Aires and spent a summer shooting in Slovenia
- voila, here we are, fifth year, not bad at all. The only big minus that's following me all this years is French breaucracy. Although Slovenia entered the European Union in 2005, the things for me haven't changed much; I still need to wait in queue to get my working papers and the fact that I'm from European Union doesn't make the things really easier
- anyhow, recently I started to work as a camera operator and editor with a swedish journalist shooting the news for swedish TV. Although I started my career back in 94 working the same things, I enjoy a lot rediscovering it now
- so, when I don't work at school or with swedish guy, I edit the documentary about Brina. So, here I'm am, doing my best of Rodin's Thinker.

ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
Sunday started with a sad news: Franci Slak died yesterday. The death doesn't ask if it's suitable, it just strikes and I, stranger in a foreign country, feel a need to write in a foreign language that my heart is full of pain.
Our first closer meeting was on a premiere of Straight Ahead, my first short film, back in 1998. After the screening he came to me and said: "Congratulations, great effort and even bigger achievement". The moment is still very vivid in my memory, the great filmmaker approaching the young one. He told those words in his pathetic style of filmmaker, of true artist, that I rarely met in my life ever again. I really admired him because of that and I'm gratefull that he made my entering in the world of filmmaking something that I will never forget.
In the next years I was meeting him quite often, as we were good friends and colleagues with his stepdaughter Tosa. But in the last few years we got closer. In 2003 he produced The Frontiers of My World, documentary that we shot in Western Sahara. His help in the editing was priceless, he guided us with his enormous knowledge and he never crossed the line trying to impose something that was not part of our vision. There I first met a great pedagogue who had shared his knowledge over the last 20 years with Slovenian students of film directing.
While I'm writing, the memories of summer 2006 are jumping through my mind. In that period I had lived almost two months in his house in Slovenia, while finishing my film paris.love and working as his assistant on his film On Earth as it is in Heaven. Although he was very much affected by his illness (his weight was around 54 kg), I was astonished by his energy, by his will for living. Always in the move, always thinking, imagining new things, new projects. During that time we had spoken quite a lot, about his life, his work. We watched his old movies and he was remembering the interesting things, never really in a sentimental way but rather analytically and with a lot of humour. During those two months he shared with me not just his home but also his emotions, feelings, thoughts... I'm very proud that I shortly followed Franci on his personal and creative path of his life.
Our last meeting was in August 2007, when he came upon my invitation to be a part of the party scene in a documentary about Brina Svit. He was as always, charming and witty, full of new plans. Two months after he proudly wrote to me that he became a grandfather. It sounded as a begining of a new period in Franci's life.
But cancer won one more time. We lost a great humanist, pedagogue and filmmaker. The spirit of filmmaking without him will never be the same. FADE OUT

Ratatouille - film location
Today I passed by this place and I finally made a photo. I remember how impressed and shocked I was the first time I saw it, few years ago, before the film came out.
For cinema buffs who will visit Paris, you can find it on 8 rue des Halles in the first arrondissement.

Sstress
It's a good title for what I'm going through at the moment but I will be able to speak about that in few days. Meanwhile I continue uploading my films.
So, Sstress was shot a year after Director's Cut, following two basic ideas: first, film reels are again the leftovers from the frige (this time Danijel Hocevar gave two and Franci Slak one), second, the film should be in one shot following the idea that the specific of the frame is that there are some things outside it that we can't predict or imagine.
So, the crew: Vladimir Vlaskalic sat on a chair, again Bozo Zadravec as D.O.P., Mojca Gorogranc as make-up artist, Marjan Jelnikar as a grip, Julij Zornik sound-mix, editor Janez Bricelj, producer Danijel Hocevar and I operated the camera and directed it (I am credited also as a producer). We shot it during several hours one sunny night.
Trivia:
- the electric chair was primary designed for video clip of a famous Slovenian group Siddharta by Pepi Sekulic

Films, Films, Films... - Director's Cut
I've just started uploading my short films and other stuff on internet, because I would finally like to have most of my work in one place (which will be on this blog - in several days I will rearrange Filmography section).
I've decided to publish them also on posts, as I will upload them, with the short stories about shoots, festivals, etc...
So, here we go:
In winter 2001 I was sitting in Emotionfilm production office chatting with Danijel Hocevar about god knows what. He prepared me a coffee and I went to get some milk, I opened the frige and I saw inside 3 small reels (120m) of 35mm film (I think two were 500 ASA and one 800 ASA). I asked him what's that for and he explained that those were the reels - leftovers from previous project, they didn't use them and soon they would be out of date. I turned around and told him: "Dane, I have an idea!".:)
As I remember, that year we didn't shoot a lot of films in Slovenia, so for one afternoon shoot I called my friends, Sloveniian film workers to help me. Dunja Zupanec and Blaz Valic accompanied by Jurij Meden were actors, Bozo Zadravec was D.O.P., make-up Alenka Nahtigal, costumes - Sabina Buzdon, grips Stane Podobnikar jr. and Marjan Jelnikar, prop master - Rudi Pozeg, sound post-production Julij Zornik, Danijel Hocevar produced it and I was screenwriter, director, editor and camera operator.
Here is a crew.
And a picture from rehearsal.
Funny thing was that this was really no budget shoot, so we borrowed the electricity from Nino&Jelena's appartment. To fix it over the street it looked like this.
Anyhow, here is the film. It was kind of festivals hit, they really liked it, esspecially showing it on closing ceremonies.:) And the film is really made for cinema, because it uses the cinema hall as a film element.
Trivia:
- the voice of producer at the end of the film is acctually the voice od Danijel Hocevar. As I remember Julij Zornik recorded it directly from his mobile phone.
- Jurij Meden, Slovenian famous film critic and filmmaker plays the role of the director.
- on the first few screenings in Slovenia, at the sound of teared film and blank white frame, the cinema operators were constantly stoping the projection. We had to accompany the film reel with the warning: "In this film the effect of teared film is used. Please don't stop the screening.".

A bout de souffle - commercial
Voila, finally.
I helped Andrew Brooke, the friend of mine, who last year graduated at Eicar film school on his commercial assignement.
He didn't need to persuade me a lot, A bout de souffle is one of my favorite films and I had a lot of fun editing this. It took him another year to fix the music and sound but finally, here it is.

Slovenia Mix Summer 2007
As I promised, here we go.
I took this photo in the plain day but it was raining as hell. I took it with flesh so this is what I got. Those are Jure Cernec and his girlfriend Svetlana.
One day we were sitting in the evening on workshop Divided God in Ljubljana: Vava, Tom, unknown, Zelimir Zilnik, Maja Ziberna and Dzeni.
On the first part of the shooting with Brina we visited Bled. I insisted on taking photo of Brina and Pascal in front of ex Tito's villa.
Here is a link where you can see a lot of photos from the workshop The One Minute Jr.
And at the end, last day of the second part of the shooting with Brina, party at her place.

Back In Paris
Voila, after 40 days of travelling around I'm finally home. Actually I came a week ago but usually when I come to Paris after a long period of time I allways need a week or so to adapt. However, for the beginning, two things:
First, I plan to do in a day or to a photo review of my summer activities around but here are two pictures that go out first. One day, while I was on holidays on Croatian island Krk, I had seen a poster announcing the tv screening of the football match between Hajduk and Sampdoria in a bar near sea.. I thought it will be fun so I went there. As you see here, tv was placed on the beach side, with a sea behind it and it was connected with hundreds of cables and antena from 70's. The game started and we could barely see the players moving around but because of the noise in the picture the ball was completely unrecognisible. So we protested to the boss of the place and then the real fun happened. He started to move antena left and right, up and down and in all possible directions that you can imagine. Very quckly also we, the spectators, joined the club; each one had his own idea what to do to fix it. This lasted till the end of the first half time when we got tired and decided to relax during the break:). But ones the second half started we were all there again trying to fix the picture. I think it's not neccessary to mention that we didn't see the minute of the game but we had had great fun.
Today I received an e-mail from my friend Karim Raoul. We worked quite a lot together (among other things he was D.O.P. on paris.love) and after he moved back to New York we stayed in touch all the time.
Anyhow, he opened his website (the link is also among my favorites) with his photo work. Definitely worthy to check. I found this picture, that I'm publishing here with the approval of the author, very strong (bird=airplane); I just don't understand how he didn't sell it at the time.

Summer Time
...and the weather is easy. After the heat-wave last week I can finally do few things (not just trying to survive in horizontal position). Last week, apart from few meetings, I haven't done much. I shot a statement for Slovenian internet portal vest.si regarding the situation in Slovenian film industry. It's a long story and I don't want to go in details here but few guys in power managed to destroy the politic of Slovenian Film Fund literally over the night. The text in the statement is:
The situation in Slovenian film is finaly balanced and it can be explained by Newton's 3rd Law: If object A exerts a force on object B,
then object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A.
Populary we call it the law of action and reaction.
Yesterday we had a barbecue with a guys from Luksuz Production. At around 6 p.m. it was still quite easy and then exactly at 7 p.m. we started. I was chef, because I really enjoy in that and the great thing isthat the day before Tom bought new grill.
In few hours I will go to Ljubljana. The whole next week we will continue shooting Brina's portrait for national TV.

Business With Pleasure
As usual, I would say. As I moved to Paris, my visits to Slovenia are always connected with some work and a lot of pleasure. Last week I spent two days in Ljubljana because we were shooting "Slovenian part" of the documentary Lady Svit. I stayed at my friends appartment Nino and Jelena. I know them for quite long and we have also very long professional relationship: Jelena made music for my first video films, then they both made music for Straight Ahead, after that I've worked for almost two years on docu-fiction TV emission Odklop and Nino was making the music and again we worked together on paris.love.
Shooting days with Brina were very nice. First day we spent in Ljubljana shooting interviews with Zdravko Dusa - her editor and Peter Kolsek, writter and old friend of Brina. Peter was a bit ill so we couldn't do a lot with him, but the part we shot was very nice and we caught some emotional moments.
Next day we went to Kras, where Brina and Pascal have their house - summer residence. Unfortunately no pictures from there but for the next time I promise some because the place is magnificent.

Welcome To Slovenia
I know, I know, it's been a while. So, I'm in Slovenia since last Monday. My friends from DZMP gave me the place to stay. Here you can see it:
I came in Slovenia in the middle of the night. On our way to Krsko we picked up two hitchhikers, Legba and Lauren. Here is what they told us, after a night spent in the club:

Leçon de cinéma
Sometimes it happens; the atmosphere is right, there is something in the air. Several days ago, after we had lunch and we had discussed the school issues, we stayed sitting in a restaurant: Nenad, Adriano and myself. School year is over so we drank few glasses of wine. At one moment and I don't remember by what was it provoqued, Nenad started to analyse Adriano's last film. And one of those magic moments started. We call Nenad maestro, because his knowledge of cinema and art in general is huge. He shares that knowledge with his students and also with us, his collegues, on a daily basis. But just sometimes it seems that all his passion wakes up, and than he goes with all his heart deeply into the life and cinema. I hope I can bring you closer the moment of that day through some of these photographs. It started like this:
